The misconception: "You can't really diagnose anything virtually"
This is one of the most common things I hear from new patients — and it's worth addressing directly. A medical diagnosis is based primarily on history and symptoms. Studies show that in primary care, 70–80% of diagnoses are made from the patient's history alone, before any physical exam or test is ordered.
When I ask you when your symptoms started, what they feel like, what makes them better or worse, what medications you take, and what other health conditions you have — I am doing exactly what I would do in an office. The absence of a stethoscope doesn't change that diagnostic process for most common conditions.
What I can do virtually
- Diagnose and treat infections (UTI, strep, sinus infections, ear infections, skin infections)
- Evaluate and treat respiratory illness (bronchitis, flu, COVID, allergies)
- Prescribe medications and refills (for non-controlled medications)
- Order lab work and interpret results
- Manage chronic conditions like hypertension, hypothyroidism, and high cholesterol
- Provide medical weight management and GLP-1 prescriptions
- Evaluate skin conditions (rashes, acne, eczema) — you can show me directly on camera
- Provide sick notes, referrals, and documentation
When I'll tell you to go in person
I take patient safety seriously, and I will always be honest if a virtual visit isn't the right setting for your care. You need in-person evaluation for:
- Chest pain, shortness of breath, or signs of a heart attack
- Stroke symptoms (face drooping, arm weakness, slurred speech)
- Severe abdominal pain
- High fever with stiff neck (potential meningitis)
- Injuries requiring imaging, sutures, or physical exam
- Conditions requiring in-office procedures (ear wax removal, wound care)
I'd rather earn your trust by being honest about my limitations than overpromise what a virtual visit can do.
Not sure if a virtual visit can help?
Book a visit and describe your situation. If it's beyond the scope of virtual care, I'll tell you immediately and you'll receive a full refund.
